The overdrive on my 1990 740 wagon (automatic) kicks in spontaneously, usually in city driving at around 30mph. Pressing the od switch on the shifter has no effect on releasing it, although it will go back to normal by itself after a few minutes. The shifter switch is reliable when I intentionally engage the overdrive. What should I check first?

Overdrive relay. It develops cracks in the solder that intermittently conduct. The light on the dash should reflect the overdrive status if it is the culprit.
