Transmission Conversion Woe's 200

I'm trying to convert my 79 264GL tranny from a 3-speed BW55 to the AW70/71. I found the donor car (86 760GLE w/B28F) but have come across a problem. The AW70/71 out of the donor has no place for the speedo cable. It must have an electrical sensor in the differential for the speedo. I would like to know if anyone has ever made this type of tranny work for the mechanical speedo? Another question I have is I know that the 4-CYL AW70/71 tranny's have a different bell housing than the 6-CYL AW70/71. Is it possible to swap bell housings on this type of tranny? I could get the bell housing from the donor car and just try to get a tranny from a 4-CYL. Any and all info would be great. Thanks to all in advance.

Sincerely,

Nickvjr

    Transmission Conversion Woe's 200

    Hi Nick

I am sorry I didn't remember that the trans didn't have a speedo drive the late 240 and the 700 series cars have there speedo drives in there diff. The second Email I sent you last night about the bertone forum has a post about the AW 70 conversion and has a remedy to solve this problem. If you didn't get my Email here is a link the the post(read post 11)

Another option is the upgrade to a speedo drive diff from a late 240 I think they are post 86 240. The speedo has to be upgraded if you go this way there is only 3 wires from the diff to the speedo

No, I don't believe you can remove the bellhousing from the AW70/71/72 transmissions. However, the mechanical speedo drive is something that you may be able to swap into the V6 transmission. Your other choice would be an aftermarket electronic speedo, but that may or may not require you to swap in a different rear end.

That said, I wonder if it would be worth just swapping in an M46. I know that I saw a whole bunch of V6 cars in the yards on Monday. Many had manual transmissions. The really V6 specific parts (clutch hydraulics, bellhousing, crossmember) would probably be a lot cheaper to ship than the tranny+od if V6 manual transmissions are scarce where you are.
