I want to replace the thermostat and adjust the valve clearances this weekend. Will I need to go to the volvo dealer to get the appropriate thermostat (with jiggle pin) and valve shims? Does NAPA or a discount autoparts house carry any of this stuff?

You can get the right thermostat from the discount auto stores. I got my thermostat at autozone for $6 last week.

IPD has the kit, lots of shims in salvage yards (you can build a collection with effort) and some VWs apparently use the same shims. It is nice to have the IPD kit because you only pay for what you use and your car is not down while you run around for shims. But it is really great if you can get a group and do 3 or more cars.
