Mobil 1 at Wallyworld 900

Our local WalMart (Baltimore) has now carries Mobil 1 in the 5 quart jug in all weights as a permanent stock item. They toyed with them a while back, but apparently now its here to stay. Of course there isn't a Volvo on earth that takes five quarts, so you have to fiddle with the amounts. It was $18 plus change. Don't know if this is a national distribution decision or not.

I was upstate (NY) about a month ago where the Walmarts are abundant. Every time I'm up there, I check for the 5 qt jugs so that I can stock up on it. I wasn't sure if they were there to stay or not, so I bought about 6 of them this time around. It's going to last me a while. :)

Price varies depending on region. Most recently, I've been seeing 'em at 19.08 here in SoCal and when I was up in Oregon last week.

Last year, when the ones in SoCal were at 18-ish, I picked up a few bottles up in Fresno for $15. And since I use the giant FL-1A filters, it does take up 5 qts.

I did pickup a a few jugs of Shell Rotella T Synthetic $12-ish/gallon, and a some extra bottles on clearance at $3/qt.

Though I can't say I'd really ever cared for synthetic-blend oil, at $1/qt. on clearance, it's alright.

-- Kane ... again, varies by stores.

Is Shell Rotella T Synthetic a full synthetic or a blend?

This stuff is much cheaper than Mobil-1 at Wal-Mart. Is it recommended to run in a Volvo Turbo?

Turbo or not, the only recommendation that Volvo has is the API grade of which the oil has to meet. So with that in mind, it's "approved".

As it is right now, its got Mobil 1. It'll be the next time around in which I'll be using the Rotella T.

-- Kane ... the normally aspirated ones get regular or universal oil.

I think next time I'll be making the switch to Rotella T too. Like yours, my turbo is on a steady diet of Mobil-1, but I still use conventional oil in my N/A Benz.

Thanks for the info.

Didn't know how widespread this "new stock product" was around the US, but I thought it worth mentioning. An added benefit that I hadn't even thought of, however, is that it may go on sale from time to time. I'm in Fresno from time to time, but I refuse to carry acouple of jugs of oil back with me. I had enough of that act before Trader Joe's came to Baltimore!

I'm with you; I only see it periodically. I'd like it if they supplied it in 5qt bottles instead. Just about perfect for the 4cyl models.

Yeah! The FL-1A is the way to get the engine to hold 5 quarts. I never thought of that...

With my 900s, I have to use the FL300A, (when I'm out of Mann filters). There doesn't seem to be enough room for anything bigger. Still, it bumps capacity a few ounces.

Yep - and it's a genuine one too ... 900

As long as there's clearance (they're taller), the Ford Motorcraft FL-1A filters fit. If height is an issue (usually the exhaust downpipe or transmission cooler lines), then the FL-300S. Yes, they do have the anti-drainback and bypass valves (not that it should ever get to that stage!), plus the filtering element is synthetic.

Don't get me wrong - the Mann's are excellent filters, and I do use 'em (and keep a bunch of 'em in stock, courtesy of iPd), but on the same token, extra capacity doesn't hurt either.

Kane:

Thanks for the tip. I will have to give the Motorcraft filters a try. Are you using the FL-1A on Blossom II? Sounds like extra capacity might be just the ticket for the B230FTs in my wifemobile and daughtermobile.

Right now, I'm not (Mann), but did on the last oil change.

The choice is moreso what I get my hands on out of my stock, not so much for which car. Mann's and FL-1A's have been used on all of my fleet at some point or another.

In another Volvo life, I remember purchasing longer filters from IPD for my 245, although I don't recall it increasing the oil capacity that much. In those cars, clearance was not much of and issue...
