What Is Where??? Links Please!!! 700 1989

The more I read these boards, the more I realize that not only does it take years of experience to know HOW to solve a vehicle problem - first you gotta know WHERE the item in question is! I am amazed at how many brickboarders know the exact name, location and size of each of the hundreds of pieces under a Volvo's hood. I am getting more and more frustrated at not being able to follow what's going on.

I have the UK manual for my '89 740 Turbo (know it by heart by now), and I bought some CDs someone sold on eBay that contains many b/w images of certain parts - but not nearly enough.

Therefore - I am wondering if people out there have built Web sites, or know of some, that contain pictures and names of parts of a Volvo (such as the various hoses and pipes attached to an intake manifold, the names of the various electrical components, etc. etc.) that would help me and I'm sure many other people out there find their way around their bricks, and become more efficient FIY-ers.

Thank you in advance for any replies!

An excellent item to purchase is the volvo wiring manual for your vehicle from volvotechinfo.com In addition to having the wiring for every system on you car it shows you the location and drawings in an accompanying sheet. It wont show you things that don't have a wire going but it a great beginning.

Check the Volvo's own owners' site at http://owners.volvocars.com/

You need to enter your car's vin and a working email address in order to become a "member".

They have a great educational section with "General automobile principles", "Maintaining your Volvo" etc.

The site is not intrusive (so far) -- i.e. it does not push ads/services.

Good luck!

Well, here are some of my favorite sites. They are somewhat 200 series oriented, although remember that the engines are pretty much the same for the 200/700/900 series four cylinder engines.

Volvo Service Tips: http://www.volvo-power.net/articles/servicetips/tips.pdf
(has illustrations and has material for several different types of Volvos).

Bill's Volvo Information Page: http://billgarland.mcmaster.ca/volvo/volvohome.htm
(info on different types of engines in different volvos, etc)

RPR Tech tips: http://rprusa.com/frset2.htm
(illustrated repair tips)

RPR Catalog: http://rprusa.com/rprstore/rprstore.htm
(has illustrated parts lists for suspension, steering, ignition parts).

Swedishbricks Tech Tips: http://www.swedishbricks.net/TechTips/home.html
(A small list of tech tips, many with illustrations/pix).

Volvo Performance Tuning (VPTuning): http://www.vptuning.com/howto/howto.php
(some useful how-to's with labeled pix).

Hope these are helpful. I'm sure others will have other suggestions.

you know, i just ask when i'm not sure where something is, or i scour the FAQ.

if you're talking about the more general/broad descriptions of parts in a car and not volvo specifically, you can always look at http://www.howstuffworks.com and search for things like 'engine' or 'brakes'.

afterwards, i just sort of picked up on the names of stuff. i've been coming to brickboard for about 2 years now. before brickboard, i was a total idiot. now i'm just a semi-idiot. :)

Hi,

I can share your feeling too. What I have found to be very useful is to understand an engine's operation well and to render that understanding into what you see under the hood. Not just at a conceptual level but to take into consideration the various nitty-gritties.

For instance, you brought up the point of the various hoses and pipes and attachments. If you understand an engine, you can almost "follow the flow" and can guesstimate at a part's name and/or function.

BTW, I too am amazed at how familiar many posters are with various minutae of a brick. I hope I can get there someday too...

George

Have you checked out the 700/900 FAQ yet? It contains pictures, descriptions, part numbers,etc.... It can be found here! http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FAQSummary1.htm or via the pull down features menu on this site. Hope this helps.

Yes, I've traveled the FAQ plenty of times. It is fantastic as a problem-solving resource. However, I'd have to read and reread the entire FAQ in all categories in front of my engine to begin understanding what refers to what. A web site with pictures and callout names would be much more efficient.
