Strut Mounts--I paid my money . . . . 200

and I'll let you know how it works/fits/etc . . .

Thanks to all . . .

First, I got one of the struts on the 244Ti changed this past weekend. I hadn't done this before, but it went much better than expected. The existing strut (OEM deCarbon?) had failed in dramatic fashion--about 2 inches of travel with no resistance, than no travel/infinite resistance (BANG!) Top of the strut was covered in what looked like moly-grease (strut guts?). New strut (Sachs Advantage from fcp groton) plus volvo spacer went in just fine . . . .

The strut mount on this side looked pretty good--apparently it had been replaced not long before I got the car. It was marked "BOGE 2-22-000042-02" and "606." The center bearing was marked "Germany FAG 53088 0A . . . . 1B"

I picked up a replacement mount for the other side from BAP/GEON today. It's in a box marked "MTC Automotive Products" The box also says "Made in USA," but maybe they're refering to the box . . . No markings on either side of the mount, but the bearing is stamped 10451. The head of each of three studs is graded-stamped "8.8" Cost was $40+tax, and guaranteed for a year.

If this one doesn't fit, then I'll probably try the SKFs from eEuroparts as suggested by "Kane" (thanks! If I hadn't already ordered this one, I'd have gone with the SKFs from the start)

With any luck, my son and I will have the car back on the road by the weekend . . .

Thanks again!

Steve A-

    Strut Mounts--I paid my money . . . . 200

I'm planning on installing Sachs Advantage strut cartridges also (I've already bought the equivalent shocks for the rear). I've been trying to get clarification on whether I need:
    - spacers
    - bellows
    - bump stop

Mine also has the originals installed (86 240DL). Will the spacer already be there from the old cartridge, or do I need to order them (if so, how many)?

What about the bellows and bump stop? Do the originals use these, and do I need them for the new cartridge?

Thanks in advance for you help. I can't afford to get it apart and then find out I'm missing parts.

      Strut Mounts--I paid my money . . . . 200

      Hi,

Sorry for the delay--I was out of town for a while and was unable to access the internet . . . .

Not sure about how things are set up on a DL, as all my work has been on the turbo. However, the folks you're buying the struts from should be able to help you on what you need.

I "think" that you will find the little spacer-rings already in the strut tube, but they're relatively cheap if you need to get them.

My car didn't have bump stops, just a big corrogated bellows/boot. I re-used the ones that were on the car as they seemed to be in fine shape. These are pretty cheap to though, so again, not a real big deal.

I followed the steps outlined in the Bentley manual and it all went pretty well. Differences were:

      1. Used impact wrench (instead of volvo special tool) to loosen the nut at the top of the strut--be careful not to remove the nut . . .

      2. Used a brass drift and large hammer to start unscrewing the cap nut that holds the strut insert in place. Follwed this up with a big pipe wrench once I had the spring removed.

      3. Used the ipd strut tool when putting the nut at the top of the strut back together instead of the Volvo special tool. The torque required is relatively low . . . . 15 ft-lbs if I remember correctly.

Safety is paramount on this job . . . be careful with the spring compressor, and make sure you're using a goos set of jack stands. Oh, btw, now is a good time to install that bigger front sway bar . . . .

Hope this helps--again, sorry for the delay.

      Regards,

      Steve A-

    Steve:

The MTC mounts (in the same boxes and with the same markings as you describe) are also sold by alloem for $35.95 apiece. I have these in a '90 244 which has gone about 20K or so over two years with them in, no problems.
