Speedometer Broken 700 1989

My Spedo began to act up a few weeks ago and two weeks ago it just died. The odometer doesn't work either. At first it was very jumpy, tending to drop to zero whenever I would hit a bump. It did work in the rain. The problem began when I hit a bump and bottomed out the rear end and I wonder if the problem is back there.

Do these work from a cable to the transmission or rear axle or are they electric?

Please help if you can.

I've had 316,747 miles on her for a month now.

It's electric. Someone said that resoldering the contacts on their instrument cluster and cleaning it fixed theirs. The fact that you bottomed out could be a coincidence. However, there could be a problem with a shorted wire back at the diff.
