what's the best way to change fluid on a 1041 axle? 700 1991

so i've ordered new tranyn fluid and rear end fluid from amsoil thanks to the help on someone from here and well ..

i was wonder what's the best way to drain and refill the rear end on my 91' 740T ... its a 1041(eaton locker) so ... i've done work on many many an old cars so i'm very familiar w/ how to do it on GM vehicals ... but well i'm just wondering if there is anything different w/ my volvo??

so do i just pull the diff cover and let it drain out? and then put on a new gasket and refill from the top? or well what's the best way?

thanks

Get a good hand pump and you can get it all out of the fill hole, except for probably an ounce at the bottom. Make sure the fluid is warm when you do it; otherwise it is almost impossible to pump out.

Your diff should have either a drain plug on the bottom surface, if not then it will drain from the very bottom cover bolt. Drain the fluid hot, then use an automotive syringe to pump new fluid into the fill hole along with the additive required for locking diffs. Very easy.

from what i was told i dont' need any kind of additive for my diff so

and it has somekind of drain hole i guess but its like 1/4 of the way up on the left side of the cover so .. is that the drain hole? or do i just undo the bottom bolt it and will drain that way?

and warm .. so drive for like 10 mins then drain?

As Chris Herbst mentioned, the easiest way is to use a pump. They cost about $5 at any auto parts store. They're ususally sold right next to the gear oil. (the pump is designed to screw on to the top of quart gear oil containers) You use the pump to extract the oil thru the fill hole on your axle. Then when you're done pumping it out, you empty the pump, and use it to pump the new gear oil into the axle.

I was thinking of an lsd diff when I mentioned the additive. I know that my owners manual for the 92 240 diff with lsd mentions the additive. I thought that lockup diff was the same as lsd. The drain should be at the lowest point, so try loosening the bottom rear cover bolt and see if anything comes out and then retighten. This drain is common on the late model 240s unlike early models, and my 94 965. Hope this helps. Refer to your owners manual for some authority also.
