I have the opportunity to buy a 74 142 that looks very nice for $350. I am located in Portland, OR, but it is in Victoria B.C. The reason for the low sale price is because it has some major engine problem that would cost too much for the current owner to fix. It is FI, odn't know if it is E or F but it has an m40 coupled to it. The engine runs and the owner wouldn't mind driving it short distances. It has non working heated seats and non working power steering. Otherwise everything else is in decent shape so I hear. It has 198000 miles on it... Anyway, as you probably already know, I have a 1968 142 with a 74 motor w/weber on it and m40. My engine as far as i know is in good shape (I don't have problems racing it) so I was wondering if I should pick up this car and swap engines. I also just picked up a pair of SU HS6s and aluminum manifold for them at the IPD garage sale...

The problem with the canadian car is something in the bottom end, so I was wondering if I should switch bottom ends and keep the FI or swap whole engines and put the SUs on my current engine and sell the FI......
Blah, blah blah,
What do you think??? About everything, including getting it down here...
later,
Kyle

'74 would be a K-jet motor, I do believe. Not that that's a bad thing.

You might want to check out what it takes to import a Canadian car. Customs duties, smog equipment issues, legal stuff???

I don't suppose it could just be a noisy timing gear that sounds like bad bottom end, could it? I guess you have no way of knowing from where you're at.

I didn't drive my car because I couldn't find a diff gasket except for one at IPD so I got one there. I drove my mom's purple minivan with chrome 15" wheel covers... Oh well. now I'm back on the road again in my car, trying to stay at lower speeds to keep my noisy/busted diff in check...

Kyle

My car needs brakes all around, has been in two "crashes" just while I've owned it, has worse rust than the car in canada, has 252K on it, and needs a new diff/rear end. So If I swapped blocks, I could sell my current car as a parts/project car for maybe $350 with the weber on it. blah blah blah,

Fuel Injection is nice, but it's got too many miles on it to be good. I rather think a 68 is a much better car than a 74 too.

The crank issue is that the crank bolt (known as the harmonic balancer bolt on domestic engines) is sheared off. It occured when the power steering bracket sheared from vibration fatigue.

It also has need of a heater fan, and we know how much fun that is...

The body's pretty good, exceptional for Canada, but has been repainted badly from 111 blue to a generic metallic navy.

You won't get SU's to work properly without replumbing the car right from the tank.

I know this sort of flies in the face of the friendly tone of the board, but since you posted, posted again, and reposted on the topic, have you considered that much of whats wrong with your car is a result of your "racing" it?

First of all, how do you know about the car? Second of all, the diff problem is because of racing it. Otherwise, all other problems with the car are because I got ripped off when I bought it. The last person who owned it neglected it and I can tell that it was raced/autocrossed at one time. Then I became the owner of it after the last owner decided that there was too much crap wrong with it.
Anyway, are you suggesting that racing an old Volvo is a problem?

Oh well, I'm not interested in the car anymore, it is too much of a hassle and I can get stuff to fix my car around here. I just have to try harder and my car will still have an ugly body and bad records and no leather seats and no other stuffffff... Blah... My car is pissing me off right now because the diff is acting up even more.
Peace,
kyle

also, the reason I reposted is because you guys didn't answer or see it the first time. I'm just looking for advice. The 140 forum isn't in use as much as the others so people might miss it because they don't check back often.
