what would you pay for a 960? 900 1992

Hi all,
I have a 1992 960. The car is in excellent condition. It is silver with black leather interior and the alpine 6 disk cd player. There are no flaws inside or outside of the car save one, a cracked engine block. I paid $3500 for the car with 90,000 miles on it and it now has 100k. I'm not sure if I want to dicker with putting a new engine in the car so I was considering selling it as is but I'm not sure what I should ask. Any thoughts or ideas? Cheers,

J. Studer

For that car in that condition, you are probably looking at salvage value, probably around 5-600 dollars. Figure your 3500 minus the cost of a replacement engine at a garage (2500-3000?). Sad thing is, it probably has lots of life left in it if you do get the engine fixed. If I had the time, energy and inclenation, I might do it or have it done. Your call.

Just a question of clarification...how did the engine block crack? Was it porous or did id crack as a result of some other insult?

In term or your dilemma, I'd make your decision based pretty much on economics. Assuming you want to stick to that model, it's a matter of preference and cost to either swap out the engine or perhaps move up to a later model year. I fave owned the 92 965 and now a 97 V90, and love them both. I found the 92 a little more closely aligned with the older traditional volvo with a some added bells and whistles, andof course that beast of an engine. I really like the nivomats as they are ideally suited for the wagon. The 97 is more comfortable and even more refined.

It was porous.

Greetings... just to let you know there is a '97 960 engine with 58k miles for auction on ebay right now. If you like the car as much as I like my '96 960 then I would go with a later model engine and install it myself..
hope whatever you decide works out for you.

the other option is to do the ford (yuk) 5.0L conversion. I actually have a motor and trans I just don't want to do it. Oh boy...

Unfortunately, the 960's have a reputation for being somewhat fragile and the earlier ones more so. Your cracked block problem is not uncommon. If you have good mechanic's skills (or a buddy who does and will work for beer), AND you really like the car, you may be able to locate a later year engine from a wrecked car and install it. If you have those skills, lots of garage space, and want to extract a decent $ from the car, you can disassemble it and spend a lot of time selling on eBay. If you want it out of your life quickly, it will probably have to go at a distress price.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck.

In today's market with a glut of used cars for sale on every corner and every lot, I myself would not even consider buying any car with a blown head gasket UNLESS I had plans of fixing it myself, in which case I might offer you $500 to take it off your hands. Also, your car, more than likely, has that Nivomat rear suspension that lasts about 100K miles and is EXPENSIVE to replace...between 12 and 25 hundred US$

just my $.02

Good luck

The car is probably worth less than a used motor. As far as the rear shocks you can install these yourself for about 400us and 6-700 at the shop. Part it out on ebay and make more than it is worth. Sorry to hear your dilemma.
