A/C relay maybe 200 1987

So lately when I turn on my a/c it takes a while for the fan to kick in and the a/c to start working. Yesterday after running for a while it started to blow warmer and warmer, I noticed the fan wasn't working, then it started working again. When it is working it blows cold so I don't think it's low on charge. Am I correct to suspect the relay?

Any help appreciated.

Kirk S.

So, a little follow-up. After pulling the relay and re-soldering things seem to be working fine, drive the same distance as yesterday when it shut down a couple times and today it worked fine. Now I'm a bit curious as to the state of my relay previously. It seems that the a/c cycled quite often before unless it was very hot outside. When the a/c was shutting down it seemed like the a/c (compressor) wasn't cycling off. Is there a shut off so the compressor doesn't overheat? If so, this could explain why the a/c was turning off. If not I guess the relay just needed re-soldering, there were definitely some suspect points on the relay.

    thanks again

Does the Fan Motor work with the Heater? If so, I suspect the AC switch with the temp probe? Met you at SunValley PickParts..

The fan works fine normal without a/c on, with the a/c and the fan off it takes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes for the fan and a/c to kick in. I did pull the relay and do a little cleanup/solder tonight as some of the connections seemed suspect. Cleaned and re-seated the connections on the switch too so tomorrow will be another test. I recall meeting you at Sun Valley pick/parts, how's that black wagon doing these days?

thanks to all for suggestions, I'll post results as they unfold.

If you mean the inside blower when you say fan then yes. It would be a good guess the relay is about post toasties.

A good cleaning/resolder could perhaps fix it but, if yours is in the center console relay cluster like mine is, it is difficult to reach. Replace it with a new one rather than fiddle with it unless you ENJOY tearing out the center cluster everytime you need to futz with it. ;->

    Gambit...

Your post is a bit confusing in that you state it blew warmer and warmer then you state that the fan was not working????

You do not state what the compressor is doing, is it running when you have the fault? The compressor is controlled by a relay.

The fan is not controlled by a relay, just the switch.

The fan and the compressor are on 2 separate circuits.

Sorry 'bout the confusion. I had the fan on 2 when it started blowing warmer, I switched the fan to off to check if a/c was on and the fan was not blowing in the off position. On my 240 once the a/c kicks in the fan goes on even if it's in the off position. I hope this is a little clearer, it was clear in my head but I guess my communication was a bit lacking.

      thanks

Yes I think it is correct to assume that the problem is the AC delay relay or the termostatically controlled temp switch. Together they turn on the compressor and the fan to low speed even if it set to off.
