What torque must I use for the Differential Pinion Bolt on my 1990 240?

    Hello Mark:

The torque spec depends on the axle type you have. If the serial number on the axle starts with an "S" there is a special procedure for torquing after replacing the pinion seal. That is because the "S" axles have a crush sleeve at the pinion. This stuff is covered in the 700/900 FAQ. My '92 did not have the crush sleeve and the torque spec was 149 ft/lbs.

I seem to remember that this stuff was also well documented in the Chilton manuals as well, if you have one.

Good luck-- it was too cold to do it myself here in March so I had it done at a shop...

I believe it is 175 lb/ft of torque. Use an Impact wrench. The Volvo locking tool is good if you have the car on a lift and can get several feet long breaker bar to swing the nut. I've tried other ways, all more painful than above.
    Have fun!
