Does my 1991 940 GLE have independant rear suspension?

As per title, I need to order rear brake pads but not sure...

I would guess it does, the only cross connecting "bar" I've noticed underneath is the rear axle.

Any thoughts?

Greg

The only 940 (which I know of) that has IRS is the 1991 940SE. The picture below is of a live axle.

The picture below is the same view of a 760T with IRS.

Probably not

If you are in the U.S., then I can definitely say it does not. If you aren't in the U.S., then most probably not. To my knowledge, the only 940-badged car that had IRS was the 940se sedan sold in the U.S., which was actually a 960 turbo in the rest of the world and thus had the 960 sedan's IRS. Like garlandw said, look under the car--if you see a solid rear axle (no swing arms, u-joints on the axles, etc), well, then, you've got a solid rear axle!

Greg,

My records show it has an independent rear. I would have thought it would be easy to tell by looking at it. There would have to be half shaft universal joints coming off the rear differential, else how could it be an independent rear end. Those joints should be easy to see. Otherwise it is a solid axle.

I too have a 91 940GLE and it has a solid axle. So it's NOT IRS.
