FI Questions 74 160 140-160 1974

The auxillary air regulator has two hoses running off of it.The hose that goes to the intake manifold has a "gizmo" with two wires coming off of it? It is near the big Idle Screw. Anybody know what this does? One of the contacts has broken off....where can I get a new one? Also: If you were standing in front of the car looking at the engine...there is a two wire connector behind the AAR,in the block...is this the "thermal time switch? Any input appreciated.

The thermal time switch fits into a 1/2" pipe thread and has screw terminals.
It probably has a 9/16" hex on it. The temperature sensor has a metric
thread that is probably about 8mm and has two 0.110" slip-on terminals,
and about a 13mm hex with a copper gasket. The temp sensor looks almost
exactly like the temp sensor that goes into the front panel to measure
incoming air temp but they are NOT interchangeable and have greatly different
resistance values. I can check the values for you if you need me to.

Thermal timer switch is toward teh back of the block, under the #4 exhaust manifold pipe. Just above and to the left of the oil filter, looking at the car from the passenger side.

Is this gizmo about 2" long and maybe 3/4" diameter? If so, I think you are talking about an auxiliary air solenoid which is controlled by the air conditioner compressor. One wire runs from the compressor to this solenoid and the other from the solenoid to ground. When the compressor comes on, the solenoid opens, a little extra air is allowed in, idle rises a bit to compensate for the drag of the compressor.

Thanks for the info.....I guess the chances of buying one of these new is pretty slim. Probably anything similar on a Volvo AC of any model would do the job.

Just a confirmation - David is right, that's the A/C idle compensator solenoid.

BTW, if you're ever interested in a '74 164 parts car, I'm looking to get rid of one. It's in South-central PA, a bit of a haul for you.

Um, not sure what your gizmo is. Is it attached to the hose itself? The two-wire thing next to the AAR is the coolant temperature sensor (a.k.a. sensor #2).

The gizmo is 2" long and cylinder shaped with a ground wire going to the ground on battery battery tray and one other lead. It is very close to the idle adjuster. Possible AC connection? Where is the Thermal time switch located?
