Two more questions. Radio and AC 700 1988

Two more questions about the ole 88 740 wagon I just got:
The A/C compressor has no belt, so I'm guessing the compressor has a problem.
How much will one cost at a wrecking yard?
The radio/cassette comes on but only plays FM or the cassette once in awhile.
How do I get the thing out and put a used replacement in?
Many thanks to all of you. This is an astounding resource.

Check faq. The radios can get cold solder joints on power transistors. Open up and check, resolder.

My 87 740gle had same problem and was fixed very easily.

Thew A/C compressors in 700's volvo were pretty good and typicly died in a froozen mode, if the outside of the Compressor spins chances are the compressor itself it okay, i know in the winter time i remove the A/C belt to improve gas mileage and to keep ware off the compressor as i purchased a new one for around $250.00. To test for leaks if you decide to do the 134A conversion yourself fill her up with some neon coloring which also comes in a can, youll need a black light with most products to see where the leak is. its pretty easy, the volvo conversion kit comes with most of the O rings you will need to replce, the ones it doesnt come with should be avai from the person you bought the kit from.

To get the radio out its kinda a pain in the but, i know the 3 ive done i remove the center dash parts below the radio, take a flat head on each side push them in ( there is one large clip on each side ) until i have pushed the clip back and pull hard, all three have slid out, make sure you get the correct wire harness for your new radio as cutting the wires and figuring out which goes where take awhile.

The removal procedure differs but mostly you need to access hooks somewhere, if this is a Volvo radio. Haynes cover this.

If the belt is off, the AC is obviously not working so the gaskets will be gone and the system be leaking. Take it to an AC specialist, they can convert it to R134a and fit new gaskets and test the compressor.
