Turning CO mixture screw is not doing anything? 200 1980

1980 242 DL B21F Non-Turbo.

I'm trying to adjust the CO mixture on the fuel distributor. I have a dwell meter that reads a steady 51 degrees with the O2 sensor disconnected. As I turn the mixture screw nothing happens to the dwell meter but I can hear the engine start to run differently. Part of that is just putting light pressure on the screw to turn it but even after taking the allen wrench out and resetting I can notice a diference in the idle. With the O2 connected the meter does fluctuate about 8-10 degrees between 48 and 56(58) which is if I recall about 10 - 15 degrees too high, but the O2 is working. What's going on hear?

Thanks in advance
Marty

As I recall the first steps in the Bentley (disconnect O2 sensor) if followed, never let me adjust the dwell (mixture). I skip that and adjust with the 02 sensor plugged in as per the second part of adjusting the mixture with a dwell meter. I have always had great results thiss way, if I am describing what I do and what I remember the Bentley calling for, correctly. If I were at home I could check this info more readily.

Connect a digital multimeter (set on DC volts) to read output of the O2 sensor. You will (or should) see the millivolts fluctuate after you turn the screw and things stabilize. Reading should be ~.3 - .5 volts, if memory is correct. Good luck.

I'm assuming this procedure is done with the O2 connected and the multimeter backprobed inside the rubber cover??
