A/C cough 900

A/C works fine but seems to interupt the normal engine noise with a cough most noticeable at crusing speed. Is it the belt slipping on the clutch? Seems to be tight. Overcharged undercharged? 93 945T thank you -Eric

    A/C cough 900

Totally Normal. Because of the fact that your driving a 4cyl rather it be turbo of N/A you feel the compressor engage and disengage. The cough feeling that your getting is from the compressor engaging. Its takes an average of 5-10 ponies from a motor to run a a/c compressor. If you had a V-8 or a powerfull 6 cyl you would never feel it cause you have the extra ponies to run the compressor!!

    A/C cough 900

This is not uncommon. For some reason, there is a noticeable hesitation when the system engages, but not every time it engages. I'm not sure what the solution to the problem is, either. It could have to do with voltage drop and grounds. That might be a place to start. I had some success cleaning battery terminals previously. The voltage drop might confuse the ignition control unit for a split second.

I wouldn't be particularly worried about it unless it is more than just a brief hesitation, but if you find the cause, let us know.

Thank you Chris, how does this sound? 900

I am inclined to think it is just a sqeek prone belt and load from the A/C but will clean the battery terminals.

What is so puzzling is that once I notice it, it seems to cycle the "cough" every 15 seconds or so and does seem to slow or advance based on 2000 RPM or 3000 RPMS. So it would appear that it is normal but VERY PREDICTABLE cycling of the A/C. I thought that there would be a little more variation in the cycling according to the cooling factors.

Hm... that is a little bit strange. What I was talking about is more random, seen on LH-jet cars.

If it is simply system cycling, it sounds as if it might be low on refrigerant (or very cool outside). That is one factor that causes rhythmic cycling like that. You might not notice poor cooling until it gets warm outside, but you would notice the strange cycling action.
