AW-71 from 740 to 240? 200 1983

Hi All,

The project continues--although last week's "blistering" pace has slowed considerably as my son and I have returned to school and work, respectively.

I've come across a newer auto-box with many fewer (about 90k) miles than our current trans . . . but it's out of a 89 740 turbo. What parts will I need to change to make it fit our 83 244Ti? So far, I'm thinking I'll need to change the output-/tail-shaft, and maybe the gear selection lever. Oh, probably the rear mount too. According to my parts man, the flex-plate appears to be the same . . . .

Anything else I should consider doing prior to the install (e.g., rear bushing/seal, selector lever seal(s), all those little plastic balls in the valve body . . . .)

As always, thanks in advance for any advice, BTDTs, etc.

Best Regards,

Steve A-

    AW-71 from 740 to 240? 200 1983

    Steve,

My son and I just put a fresh AW71 from a 90 745T into his 83 244Ti. The only modifications we had to make were swapping the tranny mount and rear tail cone . Just pulled the tail piece on the newer AW w/o mechanical speedo and removed the spacer on the output shaft ... replacing it with the 83's speedo drive gear w/spacer and rear cone. We replaced the rear
bushing/seal/gasket ...cross shaft seals, OD selenoid o rings and input seal behind the torque convertor. Cleaned the pan and filter screen and replaced the pan gasket. Filled it with Mobile 1 snythetic ATF and a dose of Lube Guard. We also ordered up a new kick down cable from FCPGronton.com for 18 bucks ... replaced the shift linkage bushings and of course replaced the rear crank seal on the engine. The new box shifts like a dream ... no leaks ... no slipping ..no malfunctions. The good part is it only cost 73 bucks at my local pick and pull ... with seals and ATF, etc. we are running a like new tranny in the old 240 Turbo for just over $100 . It is worth the effort. BTW ... I'd spray BP Blaster on all the fasterns your are going to remove a day in advance. It will reduce the amount of swearing and skinned knuckles associated with such a job. Good Luck and have fun.

Thanks for the great info. It should be a big help . . . Just curious, where is your pick-n-pull? Can't imagine getting a trans for 73 bucks! The folks I talked to today are asking 350--maybe I'll shop around a little more before I commit to anything.

How difficult was installing the kickdown cable? While our engine is out, I'm going to replace the b-21 intake with a b-23/b-230 intake manifold--that should allow the use of the original 7-series cable.

The car already has a rear axle from an 88 (with the pick-up for the electronic speedo) so I shouldn't need to worry about the speedo drive gear--though I may make that change anyways . . . .

Where did you get the instructions for the other stuff you did (rear
bushing/seal/gasket, cross shaft seals, OD selenoid o-rings and input seal behind the torque convertor)? Are they in the Bentley manual?

Thanks again for all the info and advice.

      Best Regards,

      Steve A-

The AW trans from the 89 has no provision for the speedo cable. Possibly transfer rear housing and drive gear from earlier trans?

It's the same. No modifications needed. Recommend that you change the tailshaft bushing and seal while it's out. Also look for any leaks at the front housing seal. That's the split in the transmission case where the bellhousing meets the gearbox. There shouldn't be any driveshaft issues or problems with cooling lines or anything else- though you should replace the trans cooler lines while it's out, if they're wearing through at the bellhousing clamp- common problem.
A friend recently installed an AW71 to an 89 244 (along with a B230FT) and had no trouble lining things up to replace the AW70 previously in the car.
