how tough is changing the timing belt on a 240 for a novice? 200

Anyone want to offer words of wisdom on how tough a job it is to replace the timing belt on my 1989 240 DL? I'm a little more advanced than a shade tree mechanic but I have never been inside an engine. Any advice?

You can do it ... 200

With the proper tools and some reading. You really never go "in the engine". rstarkie's last item puts it all in perspective ... if you feel you are over your head, close it up and chalk it up. We all learn by reading and doing. There is some excellent in in the FAQ's.
If you decide you are going to do it, just have a plan B for transpo - in case you feel too intimidated.

Suggestion: replace as many items as you can afford to while you are there, it will give you piece of mind. (Tensioner, main seal, radiator hoses, new accesoory belts)

    Good luck
    Happy Motoring ...

Questions like this are difficult without knowing your skill level. What tasks have you successfully undertaken in the past? What tools do you possess? Can you remove the fan clutch assembly? Can you remove a radiator and change out the cooling hoses? Are you able to remove and replace the drive belts on your car? Do you have a Bentley (or other) manual? Have the socket needed to remove the crankshaft bolt? Have you read the FAQ's? Have some way of holding the crank from turning while loosening or tightening the bolt? Are you planning on changing the seals and waterpump while you are there??

We would be foolish to encourage you to undertake this task if we didn't think you had a reasonable chance of successfully completing it. I wouldn't think changing out a timing belt would be the place to start in building your wrenching skills, but if your skill pack is up to it then by all means go for it. Technical advice is available here, but in the end it comes down to your ability to perform the task and deal with surprises that can (and probably will) occur. If you start the job and realize you are in over your head don't be afraid to stop and put it back together and chalk it up to experience. Good luck.

    Randy
