Need help with rear glass defog and swich. 200 1987

I have taken the time to read some of the postings on this site, and have come to the conclusion that there are many knowledgeable people responding to them. I hope one of them, if not all, can help me. I own a 1987 Volvo 245 and have discovered that my rear glass defog is not working. Likewise, I have noticed that the defog switch will not click to the "on" position. Nor does it light up. So, I'm assuming the switch is not getting any power. I should however mention that both my rear wiper, third brake light, and license plate lights do work. Upon closer inspection of the rear window lines (threads... I'm not really sure what they're called), I noticed that a few were broken. Now, would this prevent my defog switch from working properly? Or is the problem at hand bigger than just the broken threads? If the broken lines are at the heart of the problem, should I invest in that IPD Rear Defrost Repair Kit? Any and all suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,
Yvonne

P.S. I'm loving my wagon and I'm looking forward to keeping her going for many, many more miles to come... btw she's gone 121,564 mi. so far!!

Need help with rear glass defog and swich. 200 1987

    Welcome aboard.

The 245s of all years is fraught with problems that result from damage to the wires that enter the cargo door through the hinges. This is the usualy place to check first. Check the Archives or FAQs for a pictorial on re-routing the wires. Note that the FAQs contain significant information applicable to the 200 series, even though its title is 700/900.

The demist wiring goes through the left side hinge. Each hinge carries several wires, some break sooner than others. The wire in question is yellow.

The switch, at least on my 1986 and 1988 244GL's does not "click" on. Puching it on energized a 15 minute delay relay. The light in the switch remains on while the relay is engaged. Power for both the light and the relay comes initially from fuse #12. When the delay relay after you release the switch comes from fuse #11. This is USA model wiring.

Failure of either of these fuses will cause your symptoms. Of course, other things are powered by these two fuses. Overdrive, a/c, and more.

The fuses used by Volvo, lead foil with pointy ends, oxidize easily. It is generally a good idea, before starting up once a month or so, to use a fingertip to rotate each fuse in its holder. Takes a few seconds and often saves many minutes of frustrations.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      245s is? Cummon Bob! 200 1987

The advice is excellent. The grammatical usage is not. Bob, who was it who chided us on our abuse of the English language? Great to know that all of us are mere mortals, and can make mistakes...

Vell, dollinks - if you're going to throw stones (pebbles, actually) just because I forgot I had used the plural of 245, then be sure your glass windows are protected "cummon......" or have you, of all people, slipped into chatroom newspeak??

        Regards,

        Bob
