volvo B230 Engine Timming belt replacement HELP NEEDED 700 1987

2 nd request. My timing belt broke. After installing the new belt the car would not start and tne compression was under 30 lbs. I took the new belt off to double check the timing and I beleive I have the timing set as per the book.

I am still confused about the Interference motors in some B230 motors in the US.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ken .

Is all three sprockets lined up properly? Sounds like your intermediate or Cam is not lined up with teh Crank.

On a 700, only the cam pulley matters. The intermediate shaft only drives the oil pump. While it's good practice to align the mark, it's not needed on this engine. The distributor is driven directly off the cam. It MUST be properly timed to the crank however, and it sounds like this is not done.

There have been problems with the drive key or roll pin shearing off or the pulley not being installed right- I would take it all apart and make certain that every mark is lined up right. IT could be off just one tooth and that would be enough to cause it not to start.

Interferance B230?

Sorry I have not seen your previous post....

As far as I know all B230 are non-interferance, the only version of this motor that is interferance is the B234 (16 valve head). I have one.

If your motor truly is interferance than make sure you know what you are doing...

Greg

Not that anyone cares but I cant for the life of me understand why auto manufactures make an interference engine. My friends Volvo 850 timing belt broke 2 weeks ago and he fried his engine. The service guys must love it but not the car owners.

I understand too that the 240 is a noninterferance engine. I hope so because one of mine has 118 on the original belt. I know I need to change it badly.

An interference design allows for more horsepower to be developed for the same displacement. Yes, the the B230 is a reliable bullet proof non interference engine but not that powerful. An interference engine design is no problem just change the belt as specified, I have never heard of a belt breaking on a properly maintained engine.
