Turbo Problem? 700 1987

I'm getting ready to take my 87 Volvo Wagon, 760 Fuel Injected Turbo in for service and I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what might be wrong with it. It runs well until the needle on the turbo guage gets into the yellow, then it blows black smoke and the gas mileage goes to pot. Everything else seems to be O.K. Many thanks for any help. Gini

Check all of the hoses after the turbo. Chances are it is the one from the turbo to the intercooler. This one gets soaked with oil and gets soft and spongy. They ususually go bad on the bottom side where you can't see the damage. When the hoses go bad after the turbo the air mass meter does not see the leaking boost and as a result the engine gets too much fuel and the black smoke pours out of the exhaust. Let us know what you find.

John

You've got a leak in one of the air hoses between the turbo and the intake. The most common one seems to be the small one on the exit of the intercooler. The rubber hoses are attacked by oil in the intake - you'll see rubber rot exposing the reinforcing cord inside the rubber hose. For a temporary fix, duct tape actually seals it up pretty well. Replace the hose as soon as possible. Dealer part, or get it through one of the online parts sources.
Plenty about this in the FAQ, by the way.
Good luck!
