overdrive 200

The overdrive button on the stickshift sometimes can't be deactivated. This this a pproblem with the mechanism in the handle,or is it something else, like the overdrive relay?
Also the rear of my car squeaks a lot when I go over a bump. New shocks were installed a few years ago. What could it be?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Neils

I agree with Mike, the relay is almost always at fault in these. THere could be wiring issues underneath- access is sort of poor but with a good light you can at least inspect the wire- there's one connector under the car on the single wire going to the OD solenoid on the left side of the transmission. The relay can be replaced or re-soldered internally.

The squeak noise- you should inspect the big bushings in hte rear trailing arms. On my 87 they were completely shot and the back end sagged an inch! Jack up the car by the body and try to lift the axle with a pry bar or lever. The bushings won't allow any significant movement if they're good.

Hi Neils, is this an auto. trans, or manual. I'm guessing it's an automatic. If the arrow is lit up on the dash, then it's not going into overdrive. When the car is on, try pushing the button to engage overdrive, if you don't hear the relay clicking, then it's faulty. You can also access the relay by taking out the glovebox and the relay will be clip mounted on the dash frame left of the glovebox. Take care.
