Would you buy a 1990 740Turbo with 189K? 700 1990

Body appears excellent. Engine has new turbo. Has new tires and brakes. Current owner is car salesman and has owned car four years. Doesn't have records on car earlier, but car resided in Midwest. Needs seats recovered and headliner. Appears to have good power and run smooth on the road, but does idle roughly when in park. Will take to mechanic to get it checked out - any specific things to look for? Mileage concerns me, not having the maintenance history. Thanks in advance.

Since some of the major stuff (read: turbo) has been taken care of, off the bat, it's not 100% bad. But bad leather and headliner are not the cheapest of things to repair at a shop, so take that into consideration ...

BTW, how does the seller drive? That's a clue on how much they care or not about the car. Doing delayed shutdowns on any turbo-equipped car is a good indicator that they do care.

Although a car may not have a maintenance history, generally speaking, to have made it up to 189k, it would have to had been reasonably maintained. Timing may not always have been perfect, but that it did get done.

FWIW, I bought my 745 with 175k on the clock. It's past 197k now ... it's still the original turbo. And the original clutch.

-- Kane ... the previous owner was actually pretty gentle with it.

Little records = low, low price. I bought a 1990 745 Turbo with some records in need of leather work and headliner for $500 last year.

Price not low enough - yet, anyway. If I dive into it, I'm sure you'll be hearing back from me . . . On replacing the headliner, it has a sunroof, and the estimate we got on that was pretty high. Any advice on how to do the headliner? The seats are leather, but at least the base will need to be re-upholstered, as they were well-used. All of that adds up to $$, without any additional work on engine, etc. So it will have to get a lot cheaper.

I would buy it if the price was right. How much is he asking? The lack of records is not ideal, but if the price is low enough, then even with the money you would spend to make the mainentance schedule current, it might still be a decent deal.
I assume from your post that there's a record of the last 4 years -- is that right? It sounds like some of the expensive stuff has been done (turbo, brakes, tires).

I'd be happy with a 4 year service record -- but only if the price was right.

Just my 2-cents. Arguably worth that.

You've answered your own and the most important question, no maintenance records. Pass.
