When my 83 did that it was a large vac line had come off, think it was the one for heater controls. Man I was trying to start it, would run and die, then I'm poking around while wife tries it, here the large rush of air, bingo, problem solved, I like them cheap fixes. Fuses have done it to me too, don't just look, check for corosion and also for the foil giving way, they really are crappy fuses.
    Good Luck...

If it tries to run with the key in the "crank" position and dies immediately when the key is released it could be your ballast resistor or connections. Cranking bypasses the resistor so that's why it tries to start when cranking. Extreme case could also be ignition switch.

But if it tries to start, then caughes for a few seconds after releasing the key you can probably disregard the above suggestions.

    Good luck,

    Justin B.

    dirty throttle body.....dirty flame trap.....vacuum leaks.....worn plugs.....bad ignition wires.....corroded wiring harness....corroded fuses and/or holders...........bad battery cables/terminals.......faulty fuel pump/relays.......shall I continue?
Good Luck, Tuck (sorry) and search the archives ;o)
