Mechanical fuel pump interchange 140-160 1971

The mechanical fuel pump on my B20B engine is failing. The company I've started ordering from only supports from the 240 up, so I was wondering if the mechanical fuel pump fitted to the 240 carb. engines would fit on my B20B. Or any advice on fitting an electric pump? I'm in New Zealand and import all my parts from Europe/UK, so asking these questions to the suppliers are often fruitless.

Thanks in advance
Niel

Whatever place you buy from. Be sure to get a Pierburg. I had an aftermarket
pump on my 67 and it was always overflowing the carbs until I replaced that
horrible pump with a Pierburg. The car has run smooth without any fuel problems
ever since. Wish you well.

Hi Neil

You've got a brilliant Volvo website and good contact in New Zealand. The details are: http://www.volvoadventures.com/

The B20 fuel pump does not fit on the B21/23 engine. I've tried to fit one off my B20 engine onto my 244 fitted with a B23 engine.

Thanks Vortex, I'm actually a moderator of the Volvo Adventures forum... You can see my 144S on the member's page. The car is in daily use, and I have not yet taken the pump apart as I'm a busy man. Hopefully it is just a blocked gauze filter, and I'll have time to look at it this weekend. If memory serves me right it is a Pierburg. Volvo fitted 2 Pierburg models, an AC model, and an SUV model.

To give you an idea of supplier prices in NZ, it is cheaper for me to import a distributor cap and rotor than to buy is at the general car parts store...

Thanks for all the quick responses

Lekker om the sien dat jy jou Volvo saamgeneem het. Laat my weet watter parte jy benodig. Ek het 'n nefie wat volgende maand na Nieu Seeland emigreer en moontlik kan hy vir jou parte saambring.

Niel,
I'd try Veteranprodukter in Sweden . Their payment system may be a bit complicated for you in NZ, but ask them. Scandcar in Holland is another option. They take Visa and, I believe, other credit cards.

I believe if the 240 pump will fit in the hole on the B20 it will work OK,
especially if it is a Pierburg pump.

I've had bad luck with other brands and "no name" pumps.

The same Pierburg pump works on the B18, B20 and B30 and they are still
making them.

I agree with Chris about the electric pumps.

I doubt that the 240 pump is the same though it may be since
they did use a carb that was used in the 140s but I'd bet good
money that it won't mount up the same way. Is it a pierberg
pump? That's the *only* pump I'd spend any money at all on.
Were I in some country where the only suppliers for something
like that were in another country, I'd find a supplier willing
to ship overseas and buy two.

I would *not* buy an electric pump unless I had a fuel injected
car. Others seem to like them but I think they're downright
dangerous, in addition to being noisy and complex.
