I'm planning on the Mother Of All Brake Jobs on my '70 145.
The left rear calliper is locking when I'm braking at highway speeds.
I have another set of rear girlings and will rebuild those and install them in the back. Since I'm breaking into the system I'm installing rebuilt callipers in the front.
Seems silly to do all this and leave the same 33 year old hoses on.
I was looking at the stainless steel brake lines that IPD has, for every Volvo other than the 140. Grrrr.

Has anyone had any luck installing the kit for the 160 series on the 140?
I cross-checked the part numbers for the rubber hoses on alloemvolvoparts.com.
The 140 has 3 different part numbers:
Rear N7000-63778
Front outer N7000-30495
Front inner N7000-29351

The 160 only lists 1 part number for all the hoses; N7000-63778 the same as the 140 rear.
(I'm assuming theres 6 of them like on the 140)

Is there any other source for stainless steel brake lines for the 140?

I bought a set of 164 hoses from the dealer and while I
don't remember the exact prices I remember that I didn't
feel ripped off. Granted, they are rubber hoses, but I
suspect that the lifespan of the rubber hoses is on the
order of 10-15 years.

You can take the old hoses to a hydraulics shop and they
should be able to make you up hoses in any format you wish.
I think the rubber hoses are good enough and the brakes are
good enough in my 164.

I think you would be shocked to see how well a correctly
working stock brake setup works on a 140. I don't think
many modern cars have brakes as good as a 140, when looking
at new/correct in both cases.

ipd carried the stainless hoses for 140 series for quite a while. They were discontinued because the end fittings that attach to the hardline (chassis end, not caliper end) were too long and suffered metal fatigue; which resulted in cracking, which then lead to loss of brakes. This only happened on a small percentage of cars - something less than 2% if I remember right; but the liability is simply too great.

We tried to get the manufacturer to change the design to prevent this, but they were unable to do so.

Part numbers I show for the 140:

Rear: 670201; 687309 as an alternate
Front Upper: 677712
Front Lower: 677713

For the 164:
Rear: 687309
Front Upper: 678923
Front Lower: 678922

Some time ago I received a real good lecture right here on the bb about why ipd should continue to sell the 140 brakelines despite the failures we'd learned about. Interestingly, the same person who felt that we should continue to sell these parts was the same person - and only person - who reported having trouble with another part we'd been selling without any problems whatsoever; and told us to stop selling it for safety reasons.

If a customer threatens lawsuit over a product, the product usually disappears. I wish I could offer a better answer, but that's the bottom line.

Thanks for the information.
Reality and the pocket book took over when I got underneath the car.
Looks like the back callipers have been rebuilt in the last year or so, probably to fix the draging problem..
(I just got the car last week)
Either that or they are just unaturaly clean for 33 year old parts.
So I'm probably just looking at old hoses that have swelled up to become a check valve.
Front brakes look good so I wont mess with those.

So my first step will be to replace the rear hoses and flush/bleed the rear and see what that does.

Has there been any problems with the pressure reducer on the back brakes causing them to drag? Havent heard of any but thought I'd check.

BTW the origional post was not meant to be a dig on IPD, you guys rock!
I usaully swing by when flying home to Oregon.

If the flexible lines are swollen - at all - or cracking - they're probably overdue for replacement. Nice that the calipers look fresh!

Based on that, I'd bet that your brakes will work a lot better with just new lines. I haven't heard of the proportioning valves causing the same kinds of problems - I've heard that they either work, or they don't.

Didn't think for a moment you were digging at ipd - I really do wish we had brakelines that would work for ya!

Good chance you can have 'em made up to suit... there are shops that will put whatever fittings on whatever types of hoses you want... Wouldn't know where to look, but you can probably have it done locally.

Might talk to some of the hot rod type dudes 'n chicks... the ones that have all their hosery done in braded stainless cuz it looks so damn cool.

I believe the benefits of braided steel lines but in my opinion they would be a modification to do after doing other brake upgrades,I won't mention them since some people appear to be down on those "upgrades" but I'm sure you've heard of them! To me it would be like upgrading to Dot 4 fluid as a first brake system upgrade,while it is clearly better it isn't where I'd start.I do agree you'd be amazed at new stock parts
