k-jet injector questions 200 1981

Two things I need to know: first, do fellow board members recommend replacing both the fat and skinny o-rings on the injector holders, and second, how do you decode the date from an injector. I see a lot of numbers, but I have no idea which are relevant to the date and how to read it. BTW, testing of the injectors revealed that three were fine, but one had a bad spray pattern and also leaked. I suppose a new injector may assist in improving power output if that has been the case for some time.

Thanks,
Jeff

The part number is printed up and down the nozzle of the injector (last three digits are significant). The date code is the three digit number printed along one of the flats of the “nut” at the top of the injector. You'll probably have to pull the holder off to read the date code.

The Volvo manual lists the 007 injector for 76-78 B21F engines and the 015 injector for all 1979-on B21F (Turbo or non) engines. 015 injectors with a date code 828 and lower have slightly lower pressure requirements than the 829 and above.

To remove the holder, I found that it helps to remove the fuel line and injector from the car. Then just place the injector on a hard surface (tip down) and while holding the injector holder.. smack it on the surface.. maybe some steady pressure will help. It seems to really be hit and miss as far as which injectors will separate from their holders. Then attack the fitting with a pair of flare nut (or box) wrenches (14mm and 12mm IIRC). The plastic holders are cheap, the metal piece (if equipped) is NLA. You will probably damage the injector in the process, but by leaving the line and injector in the car, you will also almost certainly damage the more expensive fuel line (BTDT).

FWIW, FCP Groton seems to have great prices on the CI injectors ($23 ea).

      Alex,

Thanks for the info. I used the procedure from Bentley to remove the injectors - disconnected the lines at the injectors, then used pliers on the injectors to pull them out from the head. At that point, just removed the holders easily. The part number on these injectors is 014 - seems to be just a little off of the 015, probably not significant? I will check the date code tonight, how does 828 decode (YYM)? Did you reinstall thick o-ring on injector first, then insert assembly into the holder?

      Thanks,
      Jeff

Given how the turbo injectors are bolted in, I think that's a silly way to remove them (plus I already destroyed one line doing that). For a normally aspirated engine it's a lot less expensive (plastic fuel lines, no nasty top plate, etc).

Do I think the 014s are close enough? No. What was the full part number (should be 10 digits)?

Do I know how to decode the date stamp? No.

I installed the o-ring by putting some vasoline on it (inside), turning the injector upside down and then sliding the big o-ring down until it lands in the groove. The holder was pretty easy to put on after that.

Looked in the Volvo CIS manual and it doesn't say anything about deciphering the P/N for a date just gives the last three digits that the part number must end in for whatever year. The table lists an 015 for all B21FT.
