What is the reason for 2 mufflers on the 240? Is it REALLY necessary to have two mufflers?? Just wondering. ;o)

Detailer explained why there are 2 mufflers.

In answer to your other question, no, it is not necessary to have both. In fact, IPD sells a "sport" exhaust kit which increases the pipe diameter, and replaces the middle muffler with a straight pipe. I bought one, but haven't installed it yet. IPD describes it as slightly louder, but not objectionable.

Sounds good but when the resonater is working it takes a slow blump, blump, blump and turns it into a fast steady, Brrrrrrr, when this is happening the (resonater) is changing the speed of the spent fuel, ie. (scavenging)the ex.manafold. Faster out = quicker in. The suction that is behind the spent fuel as it is getting sucked threw the resonater, and sped up, is what is helping the scavenging of the ex,manafold. If that is replaced with a pipe the ex.manafold, will no longer get scavenged and than some perfomance would be lost. By the time the spent fuel gets to the point where the pipe would be, the spent fuel would not be hot enuff to expand and scavenge . Weras the resonater is desinged to take that non expanding spent fuel and use the sound wave and amplifie it, to scavenge or suck behind it, and pull a greater amount behind it. Resonate means (sound that gets a higher pich/volosity than when sounded/started) It has more back draft as a resault compared to blump, blump, blump . if this dont sound right tell me why as i would like to know

one is a resonater and the other is a muffler,i think. A resonater takes the (blump, blump, blump, blump)sound out, and makes the sound more steady (Brrrrrrr)the muffler as you know, makes it quite. Now im not sure if these cars have a resonatr, but resonaters are on most luxury cars to smoth out the sound and feel of exaust. If i am wrong i hope some one can tell why there is two.
