Quick standard Volvo test:
While cranking watch the tach needle - it should jump slightly indicating ignition pulses are present. If it's dead, suspect the hall sensor (in your dist. on a 88)or the wiring to it, common at your mileage. If needle jumps listen for the fuel pump when you release the key. There should be a hum for a second or so. If not, suspect the fuel pump relay, again common, especially at your mileage.

If it passes both tests, consult site FAQ for more detail.

See if you can pry open the timing belt cover a little- maybe the belt snapped. There's a gear there that SHOULD have a 3/4" wide belt on it. See that it spins while watching the gear, belt, and your fingers, while someone else turns the key.

If you were just cruising along and suddenly the car dies (oil light comes on maybe?) and then the car turns over maybe a little easier than normal, I would definitely check the timing belt. Then go buy a new one anyway, it's worth it.

Good luck-
-Dylan

I would start by trying to determine if the problem is fuel related or ignition. Is there spark at the plugs?? If you take the intake hose loose and spray starting fluid into the intake (open throttle and then replace the intake hose)does it run for a short period before stalling?
