Hello again everyone.

Took my alternator out the other day while replacing my belts and pulled the plastic cover off to take a look at the brushes. at 135K where was not much left of them. I would like to know if I can replave the brush/ voltage regulator pack and if so where I can get them.

I work at a smaller volvo dealer and we don't replace these voltage regulator/ brush packs like we do on the 200 and 700 series cars, we just take these alternators out and buy whole new ones.

So do I need a whole new alternator or can I get a new voltage regulator / brush assembly, and if so where?

Have a look at the slip rings as well. Mine, at 335k, were well worn down with deep groves. A local electrical shop installed new bearings and slip rings for $50 Canadian.

You can buy the brushes (requiring soldering, described in the FAQ) for about $5 as John notes, or you can buy the entire regulator for about $50.

I bought the brush set in the picture from IPS in Boise. The set was $3.49 US last year. They are for the earlier Bosch alternator, but I'll bet they fit your car too. I have also purchase brush sets from alloemvolvoparts.

The part number on the packing list is Bosch 1 287 010 704.
