1985 volvo 740 GLE wont start after running out of gas.... 700

my volvo died last night...

i ran out of gas last night and after i went through all the crap of getting some gas back into the car. it woulnt start up again..just cranked and cranked


any help????

im new to this board. and i performed a search to try to turn up stuff before i posted somthing that might be repetative...but i only came up with some threads that were almost the same

please help.

    Just a thought here, whens the last time you replaced the fuel filter? you havent said if you checked for fuel at the rail yet ( which requires either a phillips or flat head screw driver to remove the fuel pressure reg ) ( be carefull if the pump is working and there pressure there dont be in the way of it ). Have you checked your fuses to make sure you didnt blow any of the ones which control the engine and such?

      i guess the previous owner bi-passed the fuel filter and totally removed it.

      i bought the chilton and the filter is supposed to be right next to the pump..

      and its not. but there is what looks like the place where it should be mounted.

      HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

      so i guess my pump is gunked up. i tried the trick they said to do when this might have happend.

      "beat on the pump with the butt end of a hammer while the ignition is turned to the first point of on" or somthing

      it did somthing because it sounded like it wanted to start for a second.

      so i think its safe to say that i need a new fuel pump


      anyone know any good priced online junkyards???

      i checked all the fuses.. they are all fine.

      i need to check the fuel filter, my dad said the same thing last night. he said i probably sucked up a bunch of crap that was in the bottom of the tank.

      is there a place online that has pictures of what everything looks like?

      im used to wrenching on vws.

      this was a just a good deal i picked up cause im broke as a joke.

        The fuel filter is located under neith the driver seat on the outside of the the car, it sits right next to the main fuel pump its pretty big for a fuel filter. for pictures your best bet would be to surf the auto parts web sites that are selling the part our looking for they normally have good pics

          i just spent the 20 bucks and bought a chilton manuel.

          just incase i bump into any other junior volvo owner problems.

          i hope it is just the filter.

    Check to see if your spark plug wires are firmly attached at both ends. A disconnected, but still attached, coil wire at the distributor caused a running failure on my old 740. Since the coil wire is at the bottom of the cap, it can work loose.

    Check it out.

    You have probably burnt up the main fuel pump as the other respondant stated. My son learned about this the hard way.

    I bet after running out of gas you continued cranking and cranking in a febal attempt to start it. By doing this the fuel pump may burn out because it relys on gas to cool and lubricate the pump. Ehen no fuel is going through the pump it will run extremly fast. This and lack of lub. will defenitly burn out a pump on an old car. Try turning the ignition on and off then listening for the fuel pump priming for a couple seconds after turning ignition to position 2. If you hear nothing i would say go find yourself a pump. If you hear it prime you may simple have air traped in the pump or fuel lines to fix this remove your fuel line at the injector rail then crank and check if you see a steady stream of gas air bubble free. You will need to crank for at least a few seconds to be sure there is no air. Try this and if it doesnt work contact me.

      i can hear the fuel pump so i dont think its burned out, unless it still makes noise when its dead.

      where is the fuel rail located on the 740????

      i really hope its just some air.

      is it easy to do???

        Air in the line? Nope, that will not happen. Fuel circulates via the fuel pressure regulator so any air will be eliminated almost instantly. Fuel pump will not overheat and burn in the relatively short times involved in cranking the engine, besides with the intank pump the main pump is instantly primed once cranking starts. Running out of gas should not be a problem, when you put sufficient gas in the tank the car should start with little problem.

        Are you sure the cause of the failure is really running out of gas. I think the approach here is to start back at the basics. Got spark at plugs? Cam turning?
        Both fuel pumps running?

        The fuel rail is located along the top driver side of the engine.

          i have no tools where i am so this is probably not going to be fun.

          thats what i was thinking...it seems like i dont have spark.....everything is turning. the fuel pump is relativly new.

          process of elimination..fuel...power...and i think the spark is whats wrong.

          do i just need to change the plugs???? the car has been running fine for 8 monthes. i think it just died. im dig her grave now.


          without tools she'll probably put my bank account in the grave. so we'll see what i can get from free estimate.
