Power Steering rack replacement. 900

I have just been told that I need to replace my Power Steering rack. How much am I looking at? Is it true that the car must be re-aligned after? How do I make sure that the garage does a good job of flushing the power steering fluids?

I just had to replace the steering rack in my '97 960 w/ 100k miles. Total cost at dealer was $884.15, which included replacement of CV, universal joint, and alignment (I think). Luckily, all was covered under an extended warranty.

First who said you need a new rack? I was told I needed a new rack by the rack rebuilder when all I needed was an inner tierod. Quick & easy fix (thanks Rob Baris). Like the guy from ING says "it's your money".

FCPGroton.com has rebuilt steering racks with a lifetime warranty for about $200. A new one is closer to $500.

Replacing the rack is not a big deal, but a rebuilt rack will run around $300. You are best advised to re-align the front wheels after. Specify in the work order that they FLUSH the fluid thoroughly. Afterwards, suspend a magnet in the reservoir to catch any metal particles. Give strong thought to installing a Magnefine p/s filter in the return line (the shop can easily do this). Use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF as the replacement fluid.
