    One last lash for this well-flogged horse. When I explained to Tom Bryant, B16 and Diesel guru and SU rebuilder par excellance -- ad in Rolling --, he did some experimenting and found that Volvo part #1257197-2, Diesel water pump seal, makes a fine sustitute for the B16 oil filter canister seal.

    Hello ... If this car is a "Keeper" then why not convert it over to use spin-on normal style Mann oil filters? It shouldn't be any tougher than finding old parts and the mess every oil change. Almost everything that used a cartridge can be adapted to spin-on with an adaptor very easily. Try Napa for what you need on older projects. Later Gary

    I have not verified this, but Drew over at the 60's volvo project (http://www.eskimo.com/~drewr/volvo/volvo.htm) says that you can get the filter at
    Napa auto parts
    "Oil filter cartridge: NAPA oil filter number 1304. "
    I have not verified this, but I did receive a Mann oil filter from CVI (I had ordered a bunch of other stuff) and it had the o-ring. I would try your local napa (or other older auto parts store, not Kragen/pep boys). Then use the 0-ring from that filter and then reuse it when you next change your filter. It should last a couple of oil changes at least.

    My sincerest apologies to Kris and Thom and anyone else I may have misled. I went back to the parts store where I thought I had seen a Fram oil filter for the B16 (and several other stores as well) and, of course, couldn't find it back, nor could I find the reference to its application to a 1960 122S I could swear I had seen. Since I'm a non-smoker, not even tobacco, I can only surmise that I dreamed having seen it.
    I checked with our local B16 expert, and he tells me he used to get his from Beck/Arnley, but that he is holding on to his stash. Veteranprodukter and Scandcar list them, so I would assume the Swedish Classics also does, but be sure to ask them about the rubber seal ring before ordering. In your shoes, I'd follow Ron Kwas' advice, or try to cut my own seal from 1/8 rubberized cork gasket stock.
    Again, truly sorry about the bum steer.

    The other day I was in a generic parts store, VIP here in Maine, and saw that Fram still sells those filter elements for B16s. I didn't check to see if the rubber ring was in the package, but you my want to check that out.

      Do you have any idea what the stock number was for that Fram filter for a B16?
      I have been cross referencing with a Wix # 51304, but I think the Wix filter may be slightly larger than original. I too have a problem with the canister sealing properly at the engine block. I have had no luck finding any other number than the Wix.

        Guys;

        O-rings are standard industrial parts you should be able to find at for instance bearing supply houses etc. thats (one) nice thing about early Volvos...back then, they were smart enough (and a small enough company) to use a lot of standard sized bearings and seals...I wonder where those smarts went! I guess now they rather design a wierdo, "special part", to coincedentally fail right after the warranty period, and then they can be the only source on earth for them...naturally this exclusive sourcing also allows them to set whatever price they want. I guess now they have "MBA smarts".

        I suggest you "let your fingers do the walking"...just get the dimensions, cross sectional shape off a correct one(if flat: ID/OD, if round: diameter) and ask for oil compatible material like neoprene or viton. When you do find a replacement part, it would probably be helpful to others to post Manf. and PN here.

        Good Luck!
