On the Road Again... 200

The first part of this post is just me venting excitement- after about 14 months on the disabled list, my 81 242 is back on the road with new whitewalls, bearings, steering rack, alternator, plugs/wires/dist., and a few other odds and ends. I made a 7 hour road trip last night and she never felt so smooth.

There is, however, a buzz/humm that started sometime while she was sitting in the driveway in between trips to the shop. It comes from someplace under the hood on the driver side, closer to the cab than the front, but I haven't been able to pinpoint it. I have noticed that as the fule level gets lower (less than a 1/4 tank), the buzzing gets more consistent and is pretty much constant towards the red. I ran a tank of high octane and a bottle of STP gas treatment on the highway last night, but the sound was still there when I stoped for gas. Whatever it is doesn't seem to effect the way she runs, but I figure something isn't right. I plan to replace the fule filter, but any other input/suggestions are much appreciated.

    Hello,

Sounds like your in-tank pump is getting closer to needing replacement. They tend to have trouble with the lower part of the tank as they age because when the gas is high enough in the tank it provides a cooling effect. Exposed, the pump will overheat and partially or completely shut down straining the main pump which is likeley the biuzzing that you are hearing. Finger your pre-pump fuse (not sure which number) after you've been driving for a bit. It should be nice and hot. No worries, though. The in-tank pump is cheap (35-40 bucks) and it's easily replaced in a couple of hours (kind of a stinky job).

I'll second the pre-pump theory. The same thing happened when I bought my first 240 and it went for a few months before it totally died. When the pre-pump goes the car will run but not well. It's worth the piece of mind to get it out of the way. Cheap fix.

Thanks for the help- and leaving out the wise cracks mentioning that there are 2 threads on this topic in the last couple days. I usually scan before I post (which is rare anyway) but I was so psyched to drive her at all that I wanted to post that she's back on the road and forgot.

I'm guessing that if I used a mechanic to replace the alternator, this is not the kind of repair you'd advise I try myself? I've got a book, and I'll change oil, fule filter and other simple stuff, but I try to avoid the electrical system.

While I'm at it, if anyone knows a NOVA/DC area mechanic, I'd appreciate a recomendation.
