Tachometer question 900 1995

When setting the idling screw at the throttle housing, a tachometer is required. There is a rpm meter in the instrument console (the dash in front of driver) inside the car. Can I use the reading from the rpm meter here to calibrate the idling screw at the throttle?

Thanks.

Laozong

    Tachometer question 900 1995

    Laozong,

I think your erratic idle problem can be traced to the vaccuum booster. My friend had a similar problem and it was resolved with a new booster. Though it's an expensive part and can be difficult to replace.

I've done an experiment, which I don't know if it is conclusive. I removed the vacuum line from the booster to the manifold, plugged the manifold fittings and started to the card to see it that made a difference. The idling was just as erratic as before. Does this means the booster is okay?

Thanks for the suggestion, and do tell me if my experiment proves anything.

      Laozong

what is the car doing? is the idle surging up and down or is it rough? what about the exhaust, is it black or is the inside of the tailpipe really black?

The idling is erratic. In the morning, rpm would move to 1200 and then down to possibly below 700 and at times 500 and then up again to 1200 at times but mostly to around 900 and back down. It will do this for two to three cycles before hunting around at 700-900 and continue to hunt at these rpm without stabilizing. This makes the car quite shaky.

When warmed up, at traffic stops it continues to hunt around 700-900 with ocassionaly sudden drop to below 500, which will rock the car a bit.

          Thanks.

my first thought is the air mass meter. did you use a new one, or a rebuilt to test it? i never use rebuilts they are unreliable. the other thought is maybe a wiring harness problem. a bad connection or ground? are ther any fault codes?
