Is this 700 a good car 700 1988

Hi

I've found an '88 740 GL with 88,000 miles. It is a manual (rare in Australia). I'm told that 88 is a good year for 240s except for the interference motor. It is in good condition, one owner with all services stamped in the log book, and notes made about repairs made.

Is there anything I should specially look for, as I'm only familiar with my old 164E and my current '80 244 (Carb). Which Fuel Injection system is in the 88/740?, and is it a reliable system. Had Volvo sorted out the Engine harness by '88?

thanks

Alan

Based on the info in your post it sounds good. The last year for wiring harness problems was '87, so you're safe there. AFAIK there were no interference engines in the 240 or 740 in 1988 except for the D24 diesels. I am not positive but I'd bet the injection system will be Bosch LH2.2. Of course, I'm only familiar w/US-spec cars so you may well have something different. In any case the fuel injection systems on 740s have been very reliable in my experience. See the FAQ for other things to look for.

      Hi Alan,
Not sure about Australian specs but here in the UK the Bosch K Jetronic was used until 1990/1 in some models.
If it looks like the one below it has K Jet.

Have a look at the injectors (No.7 in the picture) if they are in the manifold, (rather than in the head like this one) and are fed from a single fuel rail and fitted with an electrical connection to each injector, it has
      L Jetronic.
Both systems are pretty reliable but personally I prefer the older K Jet because it is largely mechanical, and thus has a lot less electronics to go wrong.
      Colin.
