Electric fans- Need suggestions. 120-130

I have a 12" electric fan in my '65 122, but it doesn't cool the engine enough. I was thinking of replacing it with twin fans. Flex-a-lite makes a twin setup using two 8-1/2" fans offset(Model FLX-365 -Scirocco). The diamensions (18 1/2 in. x 13 in. x 2 1/2 in. mounting surface) seem to fit in front of the radiator.

Has anyone used this setup or have any suggestions before I spend $175?

Paul

When you are on the highway does the engine stay at the right temp? If not the fan is not the culprit. All my 120s have registered quite high on the dash guage(just to the left of the "H") at highway speeds. But they don't actually get that hot it's just the guage is innacurate (or does not register operating temp in the middle but to the right). My 2 cents.

I don't think the radiator is the culprit. It a new 4-row high efficiency core with a 240 radiator tanks.

I checked the fan rotation, it's pushing air through the radiator (I switched the wires, and it pulled the air the wrong direction).

I'm using a electric temperature gauge and sensor from a 240, tested it on a 240, works correctly.

At highway speeds, the temperature is right in the middle. At an idle, or low speeds, it's about a eighth to a third warmer than center (the 240 gauge should be in the center).

I'm using a cheap $35 fan that's rated to push ~1050 cfm. The flex-a-lite 365 (scirocco) is rated at ~1650 cfm, plus it has the redundancy of two fans (some cooling if one of the fans go out). I measured the opening of the front of the radiator on my 122 to be ~18-3/4" X 13". The Flex-a-lite 365 needs a mounting surface of ~18 1/2" x 13" x 2 1/2". Looks like it will fit, except the hood support may be an issue. I might be able to cut the fan shoud to get around the hood support?

Here's some pictures (poor pictures) of the fan and radiator in my 122:

I hate to spend $175 for the fans and not have them fit. Any suggestions or opinions for this fit or an alterative would be appreciated. Has anyone used a dual fan setup in front of the radiator without altering the car's body? What's the largest single fan setup that can be mounted is the front of the radiator?

What I'd do is make a cardboard form that is the same dimensions as you're talking and try to make it fit. I have seen a few 122s with that little forward facing piece of the hood support taken out, but have no idea what ill effects it may have had. You could always make (or have made up) a differently shaped support that allows more room directly in front of the radiator and then angles down more sharply than before. I have a support from a parts car you can have to experiment with if you want. Long as you don't mind the fact that it is beige.

I have no problem whatsoever cooling a considerably hotted-up B20 with a single Flex-a-Lite 12" fan. In fact, it almost never comes on.

That would suggest that your radiator isn't working efficiently, or perhaps a thermostat or water pump problem. ???

    Paul,

I don't know why I didn' thtink of this yesterday, but Dan (the guy with the beard)has dual 9" fans on a 240 radiator in his 140. More room in the "nose" of thise cars, but it could be a start.

Now for some random thoughts. The issue I ran into with my electric fan is that the hood support comes down at an angle that prevents too big of a fan going on there. The housing on mine also protrudes quite a lot further than yours. Moves hella air, though. Setting it to one side would allow a bigger fan, for sure. Dual fans oriented diagonally would accomplish the same thing. But the point there is, make sure the VW fans will fit in the opening.

I think that's it. I'll email you if I remember more. Oh, and if you want Dan's email, give me a shout.

I'm using a 14" electric fan in front of the radiator on my 1968/B20B, and it hardly ever cuts in at road speed, and then only for a very brief time. Even at traffic lights it doesn't stay on long. I thought from that experience a 12" would still be adequate.

If it doesn't cool enough, check the wiring (no offense intended!) but maybe it is rotating the wrong way. Also check when the temperature it cuts in and out. If it is cutting in at too high a temp, then it will have to work harder to get the temp down again. Finally, is your radiator in good condition? I had mine recored because it was fairly old and clogged.

    Good luck

    Paul,
How about more radiator? Someone posted a link awhile back to a web page with pics documenting his swap to a nissens 3 row 240/740 radiator in his modified 122. With the vastly increased cooling capacity your 12" fan would be more than adequate. All thats needed is the radiator, hoses for a 75 240, possibly the thermostat housing from a 75 240 or probably any 140.
