Automatic Transmission Question 700

Re: '91 740 Wagon 170K miles

The auto transmission is shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear at 3,000 RPM's and from 3rd to 4th gear at approx. 3,500 RPM's. The latter shift at 3,500 RPM's seems too high ... what are the suggested RPM's at which the shifts should take place? Can this be adjusted via the kickdown cable? Thanks.

If the kickdown cable is too tight, or binding and not releasing, it will do this. Check it for free movement and correct adjustment.
Also, flush your trans fluid if you've never done so. Made a big difference in shift quality in my cars. Info is in the FAQ.

    Automatic Transmission Question 700

My '91 740 non-turbo, 230k miles, does the same thing. The kickdown cable is fine, so I'm assuming the check balls in the valve body are worn to a frazzle. It's not an uncommon problem.

So I went out and got a replacement tranny. Someday, before the year 2030, I might install it....
