Q: Is the 940 essentially the same as a 740, but for $2,000 more? 900 1995

Looking for a 95, 940 sedan. I am familiar with the B230F, but nothing else. Selling our 91, 740 sedan. Someone told me the 940 had rear independent suspension, but a guy at IPD said he never saw a 940 with rear struts. He said there is really no difference between a 740 or a 940 of the same year. He said the 940 was just an American version of some European Volvo. He said he did not know of one bit of a significant difference. Who am I to argue with IPD?

Since you are looking for a '95 940, you may as well keep your eyes open for a '94 too. They are identical cars with identical safety features.

    Q: Is the 940 essentially the same as a 740, but for $2,000 more? 900 1995

The 1991-1995 740/940 were the same cars. The exception would be the sedans, in 1991 and 1992, where the 940 had a different rear end style that continued until the later 90s (and was shared with the 960).

The 1991 940se is hardly a 940, except for the 4cyl turbo. It is basically a 4cyl 960. That is the only car with rear independent suspension in the 940 lineup.

Most differences other than body styling, between 740 and 940 (740 91-92 only because we're comparing the two model lines when they overlapped) is basically in appointments. Mechanically they were the same car. The 940 had a higher option package, speaking in general terms. The 740 was available with manual trans in 1991 (but rare) and the 940 was not. Other than that--the same.

Obviously the 940 had some minor evolution after 1992 with dual airbags (94) and a few other little tidbits here and there. Overall very similar to the earlier models. We could go on and on with the model evolution but it really boils down to very small details. Somewhere I posted something about that; the list found on swedishbricks.net is somewhat inaccurate with 700/900 models.

    Q: Is the 940 essentially the same as a 740, but for $2,000 more? 900 1995

In alot of ways there is little difference between the 740 and 940. The 91 940 SE is the exception as it does have IRS and the wiring (location of fuses and relays) is the same as the 960. The hood on the 91 940 SE is the only 940 that goes up to the windshield(like 960). I am not sure if any other 940s had the ECC and tilt steering wheel but the 91 940 SE had these features.

Now there is one big difference in the you could get a 740s with a manual transmissions and all of the 940s imported in the USA have automatics.

Hopefully these will clear some of the misconceptions up on the differences between the 740 and 940.

He is right and he is wrong. The 940 and the 740 are very similar, certainly when they are of the same year. The latter 940s did have a lot of improvements on the 740. But, essentially, they are very similar. However, the 940 is NOT an American version. The 940 was sold here in Europe as well and looks just the same, in fact it was sold all over the world.

The 940 and 740 are very similar, but the 940 has a better engine and diagnostic system along with numerous incremental improvements.
