Anyone here hang thier own A/C hardware?? R-134a 900 1993

Just finished the dreaded evaporator replacement on my 964. Now the compressor has sprung a leak and dumped all the refrigerant. The last quote from the shop prevented me from doing both at once. I'm thinking I could save $200 by hanging a new compressor myself. Any thoughts?

You need to have the correct amount of correct viscosity PAG oil in the system once it is all together. You should work out, ahead of time with the shop, how much oil to put in the new/rebuilt compressor when you install it.

Did you already put a new receiver/dryer in the system along with some oil? If not, you should do that if you want a job that is going to last. (New orfice tube as well and new seals/ "O" rings for any connection that has been disturbed.)

When I did mine, a '96, I had to grind away some metal on my 14 mm wrench to get clearance for one of the bolts next to the engine. (I took the alternator off to gain visibility and access.)

I've never done a compressor on a 960, but it's got to be easier than an evaporator. If you got through that and can suck the system down, you should be on your way. Buy a reputable rebuilt, aircondition.com can probably help here. Good luck.

You would have no problem. The 960 is kind of a pain in the ass, but if it's a nice day, no project is THAT bad. The hardware part is simple. It's just accessing the hardware that is kind of challenging sometimes. Dealing with the serpentine belt can be an annoyance, but if you have a 3/4" drive for the serpentine belt tensioner, no problem. I think it's 3/4" anyway. I don't remember exactly what is in the way of the compressor removal though. If anything. I haven't touched a 960 for a while.
