Rear wheel bearings/seals 200 1990


Pulled the rear wheels on my mother's 240 the other day, with the intention of changing out the brake pads for her. I noticed, however, a telltale leak and upon further investigation found that the seal on the passenger side rear wheel is leaking, fouling up the parking brake and causing concern over the health and well-being of the bearings.

At this point I must admit that it's been a couple years since I've owned a swedish steed of mine own, and while I just did some very similar work on the Ford pickup I now drive (gasp!) I'm not sure how to proceed.

My questions are the following:

How are the axles attached inside the differential? Is it a relatively simple matter of a few bolts and pins, or are special tools required to remove them?

Are the bearings and seals seperate parts, or made as a single unit? How readily can they be expected to come out, and are special tools required to get the new ones in?

How much play is to be expected? Both rear axles move 1-2 mm back and forth, which I am assuming is OK, while the bad one also has perhaps 1/2 - 1 mm play up and down, which I expect is less good. Are these assumptions correct?
