740 vs. 850 700 1988

I'm looking to buy a 740 or 850 for my wife to cart the kids around. (We have a 1988 740 GLE that I love but it's starting to show its age -- dead AC, headliner gone, etc. -- and I'm going to sell the Saturn wagon and put it toward another Volvo.) Besides price, what are the thoughts out there on getting a "newer" 740 vs. an older 850? Bottom line, which is safer and more reliable? Opinions, please. Thank you.

    740 vs. 850 700 1988

I own a 1990 740 16 valve which has been a great joy to own. My wife and I are expecting our first kid later this year so we traded her Toyota in on a 1999 V70 XC Cross Country wagon. This is essentially an 850 wagon with all wheel drive. I am even more impressed over this V70/850 model. Many great improvements. The biggest reason not to buying another 740 is the lack of advanced safety equipment (ABS, front & side air bags). My 740 has ABS and drivers side air bag. If you enjoy the rear wheel drive feel, as I do, try the '97 960 wagon or 98,99 V90 wagon. This is essentially an updated 740 wagon with front & side airbags, ABS, and rear independent suspension. If you like you 740, you'll go crazy of the V90 (960) wagon (in-line 6). It has all the expected Volvo refinments and is the last best rear wheel drie wagon from Volvo.

    a few thoughts. 700 1988

They're both very safe; the 700/940 is a more reliable car with respect to the rock solid powertrain. The 850 is a great car, but I'd shoot for m/y 1995 or newer.

With respect to 740 and 940, with the 91-92 740 vs. the 940 series, we're splitting hairs in station wagon form. The 940 has a few more options in 91-92, but the car is the same as the 740. The 92 740 is the same as the 92-93 940 wagon. The 94/95 940 has dual airbags and a couple of trim options (glass roof) that the 91-93 740/940 didn't have. The 940 supposedly had better insulation than the 740, but that was really only the 960, which is a much different car (except for looks). For all practical purposes, the difference between a 91/92 740/940 wagon, is the options and the seats. The 940 had power roof, the 740 (91-92) had manual roof, electric optional. 91 740 didn't have standard ABS (a personal recommendation of mine) but the 92 740 did. The 92 740 did have standard ABS.

Supposedly the entire 940 model line had a locking differential (traction measure). The 92 740 did in fact have this as standard.

Basically my recommendation would be to find a 92 740, or a 91-95 940 wagon. Avoid 16v models for maximum ease of maintenance and lower maintenance costs.

This is not as organized by model year as I'd like; I'm short on time but wanted to say a few things.

    Have you considered a 93-95 940 ??? that's what I would consider.

My thoughts exactly. I have 2 940's, both 94's and I think the 940 is the best model Volvo made.

(My wagon is for sale, 125K southern car, no rust, sunroof, new Michelins, just serviced...$5600)

      Tks,
      CC

Thank you all for the tips . . . I had not thought about the 940 but will keep my eyes open for one (or '92 740). I've been very happy with my 1988 740 but it's the little things that are starting to go.

If the 940 for sale is anywhere near Maryland let me know . . .
