fuel pump whine - conclusion 200

Ref Previous mail fuel pump whine.

Opened the lot up, damn that ring is hard to remove with the rust and everthing. Anyhow, that crappy connector (some sort of resin filled thing) had a loose connector inside, no power to the pump. Got if fixed with a wire going through the spare third tube.

Must have been driving for at least a year without pre-pump. Did not notice anything wrong other than the whine and a slightly shaking idle. Never drive very fast either. Guess the feed-back control system made up for the loss in pressure. Main pump is not noisy, probably has not not suffered.

When I put the lot together though I noted a fuel leak, little pin-hole in the steel fuel line coming out of the unit. Patched it up, have to buy a new one at the dealer I think, won't be cheap.

Thanks for the advise.

Reg,

Jorn

I've found the simplest check for the condition on both pumps is the amp check. It will let you know when the pump is working to hard or not working, but not when there is a crack in the intank hose. Also, a main pump will go a long time with the pre-pump out if the fuel level is maintained above 1/2 to 3/4's full.

Is there a way to discribe how loud a main pump should be when it is working fine? Or is it silent? Mine is kinda loud, this is why i am asking. Thanks

Detailer (A name one remembers, good to here you're still there!)

I can not hear the pumps whith engine at idle sitting in the car with door closed etc (now both are working). When I hotwire the pumps (so that the engine is not running) I can hear a distant humm. The noise however is a lot more noticable when you stand next to the car. It's more a buzzing noise.

Without the pre-pump running the main pump had an uneven pitch, noticable while sitting in the car for a red light, and you could hear a slightly girgling noise, like it as sucking air when standing next to the car. Now it is nice and steady. I must say the driveability was never affected, even with the tank near empty.

As per OTY's comments, amp check is good, but you have to measure at the pump, mine had something else pulling over the fuse, where I first measured. I think the lambda senser (Oxy)

I hear from people a near dead pump makes a truly LOUD noise.

Jorn
