What I found when checking the valve clearances 200 1983

I found that the clearances where good, that was nice. However the cam lobes had some varnish (?) on them that I rubbed away with a clean rag, and the surfaces of the head had crud on them. Would it be a good idea to do an engine flush? If so, will it affect the seals? Since I've owned the car, 1.5 yrs, the oil level is checked regularly and I run dino oil. Thanks O' wise ones!

That varnish is normal on the cam. If you are talking about large cruddy deposits of sludge that can be shoveled out on the top of the head that is another matter. Otherwise you are OK. Regular oil changes (preferably synthetic) should take care of everything.

I'd be inclined to leave it alone - it's running OK, right? - no oil burning or low compression? If ( a big IF, IMHO) those engine flushes do what they say, it must result in a lot of crud swimming around in your oil system...possibly even after you have drained and refilled. If the engine has been OK up to now with some deposits lying in the low spots, my call would be to leave them be and just go with quality oil and filters, and change at recommended intervals. All three of our Volvos show some varnish inside the cam cover, but all run great, and I've learned to relax and ignore it.

Yeah, I was kinda leaning that way anyways, nice to be reassured. I'm getting the ole Volvo ready for a road trip and am giving everything a good once over. Thanks for the reply.
