Ignition Switch (Key) 200

I have a 81 240 and my ignition will not turn and I am afraid I'm gonna break my key if I keep trying.

Does anyone have any info (or know where to get any info) concerning removing the ignition (key) switch so I can have it fixed or replace it.

Is there an interlock that could be my problem like the transmission or steering wheel.

Any info concerning any aspects of my problem will be greatly appreciated.

Car is a manual transmission and runs well if I can get it started.

TIA for all responses....Rick

My daughter’s 242 key would not turn at all yesterday. Spray contact cleaner in the keyhole got it moving!

Yeah, I was thinking of suggesting the same. Ie. Lube it.

However, graphite (or maybe white lithium grease) is probably a better lube. Something that won't attract dirt or grime anyways.

Hi
Does your key turn, but not do the right things? If so, I'd suspect the switch. If it is the switch, it's easy. Crawl under the dash with a torch, and it should be quite obvious, though awkward (this is a Volvo!). I took mine off a few years ago, because the Accessories position disappeared due to wear.

But if the key isn't moving properly then I'd suspect the key lock, which I've never attempted.

Well, there's no interlock with the gear shifter on your 81. But that's not good news. The lock assembly is mounted to the steering column and includes a plunger that Dylan is hoping will be the reason you can't turn the key. I hope so too, because removing that lock is a bear. Bentley manual describes removing the column. Actually this is the only way I have experience doing it, in order to drill the security bolts and extract them. Must be some better junkyard techniques, but I haven't needed to try.

Now if only it was the switch that was hanging up. That is easy to pull off the back of the lock assembly after removing two slotted screws.

have you tried rocking the steering wheel while trying to turn the key? I've found that sometimes I need to do this in my 240 or 740- I've seen some US cars that required a stupid amount of effort to do the same.

Good luck-
-Dylan
