Soon to part out '80 GT 200 1980

I am taking stuff I need off of my old '80 GT (locked up motor). I got a notice from the city that I have to remove the car soon (they only allow a vehicle to be non-functional for 7 days - of course it has been non-functional for about six months). Before I have it hauled away - does anyone need GT items or anything that will not fit on my '86 245. I have pulled several things, but it still is pretty well intact. It has a set of Virgos that I haven't decided if I am going to keep or not. I just pulled a very good looking main fuel pump and accumulator off of it while taking the sending unit and in-tank pump out for my '86. E-mail me at with requests and I will shoot a digital picture and send it back. You can then make me a reasonable offer.

Here is a picture of one of the wheels. They have not been washed or cleaned for a few months as the car has sat on my street. They are very good wheels - one has some slight curb rash. They have their original center caps. The tires have about 20-30% tread left on them, so they are still useable.

Man that looks like a good one. Fairly rare car as well. Up here, the old ones are all gone and even the newest 240s can be subject to rust damage.
I wish I needed another project, and lived closer. Perhaps it can be put into a storage unit for a bit while you post it on here for sale? I'd hate to see another good body go to the scrap yard.
On ebay, those wheels are going for at least $250 a set- surely the car would bring somewhat more than that.
Personally, I'd like the seats and the steering wheel center for my 86, but again, that's a lot of stuff to ship to connecticut.....

The car does not have any rust. The car was originally silver and PO had it painted maroon. The only body issues are a few dents and dings here and there. The interior is OK it has original GT seats (black w/ orange stripe and GT wheel. Dash top is cracked. I hate to toss it, I do have the option of taking it to my Dad's house (he lives in the country about 35 miles away), but I would have to rent a wheel dolly to pull it there or pay to have it towed. If someone was seriously interested, I might consider this as I have about two weeks before I have to get rid of it. I have pulled the shift lever, some interior trim things (minor things like fasteners), the intank-pump and sending unit, and the radiator. I have a radiator that came off of my '86. The little plastic cap that blocks off some type of sensor hole in my '86 popped off one evening. Faced with driving my 10 mpg Ford Truck the next day to buy parts, or swapping radiators (the GT had a different style radiator with a brass plug in this same spot) - I swapped radiators. I hate to pitch the car as only 2000 GT's were made in 1980. If someone would buy the wheels for $200.00 I would let them have the car for free just to preserve a piece of Volvo history.

Project car for somebody??? 200 1980

What the heck!!! Here in Michigan, there are people that would kill for a Volvo in that condition. No visible rust issues from the looks of it... Toss in a new motor and have a nice GT again!

-or find somebody on this board who's got an engine to spare and do it yourself.

Are you really going to junk a car that good? -maybe it's my Michigan upbringing that's not used to seeing non-rusted cars be scrapped. If you're "tossing" those Virgo wheels, I'd be interested. I may be making a road trip down your way later this summer. (I don't know that I can offer a fair amount for them since I've just graduated college and have lots of student loans to pay.)

        Towing a vehicle safely with 2 people... 200 1980

Towing the car is easier than it sounds. About 20 feet of heavy rope or a tow strap will do the job (rope that's appropriately rated for the load, at least 1 inch in diameter if you're unsure). Tie the cars so that they're about 12 to 15 feet apart from each other (bowline knots). The Volvo in front doing the towing has an Eye-Hook in the back under the right side of the bumper, and I think your GT should have a similar Eye-Hook on the front right under the bumper (my '87 has this). Each car requires a driver and you will require double to tripple the stopping distance since the rear car has no brakes. Gentle accelerations and stops are required to eleiminate the harsh 'engagement' when all the slack is taken up. The heavier the rope that you use, the smoother the tow. Let the rear Volvo help a bit with the breaking so as to keep the line taught and allow for smoother starts (my dad still hasn't learned this well).

I've had a lot of towing experience with the dual vehicle setup and many of us in Michigan keep tow straps in our trunks year round. Lots of slide offs and extractions required and my Volvo works great in moving my dad's Mercury Sable. If you have an automatic transmission, don't tow faster than 35 mph, or whatever speed is listed in your owners manual (to avoid burning the bearings and seals since there's no fluid pressure to lubricate them). Stickshifts can be towed as fast as safely permissable.

          Towing a vehicle safely with 2 people... 200 1980

Just curious, is it possible this is still legal in MI on public highways? Normally I'd just assume folks might do this when common sense and good judgment allowed, but I hear Michigan's motor vehicle laws are less restrictive perhaps because of the auto industry there. (Yes I was busted, warned, once for this)

Legal in Michigan? Towing a vehicle on highway. 200 1980

You know, I'd never thought about that. I'll be honest, I don't know. I always avoid the highways when towing a vehicle for the simple reason that I don't tow that fast and it's harder to stop for the rear vehicle in case of an emergency. My dad's Mercury Sable blew it's V-6 this winter and I towed him to the local garage (about 15 miles) with no problems, at about 40 mph using the back roads.

Common sense would advise you to use back roads and to keep away from traffic, but I'll check on this. You've perked my interest.

            God bless,
            Fitz Fitzgerald.

My curiosity stems from hearing more lately about how the auto industry in MI has influenced legislation affecting drivers and owners. Somehow I got this impression Michigan drivers were not subjected to as much regulation as elsewhere. Here we have red light cameras and last I heard the governor was still undecided about signing a speed camera thing.

Just idle curiosity on my part...

Believe it or not, a lot of Police and law enforcement devlopement work is done here. The MSP (Michigan State Police) frequently rents the various test tracks of the Big-3 automakers for test development, pursuit simulations, etc.

Yes, a few of our bigger cities have red light cameras and most (if not all) of the local cop cars are outfitted with video survalence. This is also dependant on the departments budget so different departments will be at varrying degrees of tech level.

I admit, we have a serious problem with cell phones and distracted drivers. A little over a year ago a new law went into effect to help curb this problem. If you strike/injure/kill a MDOT road worker, you will be finded $7,500 and receive a 5 year jail sentance. (penalties dependant on severity of the injuries sustained by the roadworker) Yes, people are getting prosecuted for this and the problem is diminishing a bit. Some communities have also taken the liberty of completely outlawing cell phone use by a driver. -similar penalties to drunk driving.

                Gotta Love Arkansas 200 1980

You gotta love Arkansas - we get stopped if we don't tow a car every now and then (LOL). I once rented a tow-dolly and got stopped, police had never seen one of these before - it wasn't chain or rope (LMAO).

                Cheers,
                Lance

        Nice car! 200 1980

I agree, the view is almost without flaw - of course I already know why the trunk lock looks the way it does...

Maybe salt hasn't been a factor where it has lived. On the other hand, I've gone to look at a few ebay listings that sported views of a car to make your mouth water, only to find up close and underneath things look a lot different.

Still, it does look like there is no rust in the wheel arch or storage well! Could make us in the rust belt envious.
