idles but stalls 700

I have a '87 740 non turbo. 215K miles. All was going well until one day the mileage dropped about 5-8 mpg and after coming to a quick stop it would try and stall. If I placed the trans in neutral from high rpms it would kill, but easily restart.

I ran it for a week or so like that and my wife came in and could not get it to start past idle. It starts without a problem / sounds great even. I can raise the rpms very slowly, but if I try to raise the rpms while it is in gear it dies. I have changed the airfilter and fuel filter. It might be the MAF but want to pass it by you guys since it is such an expensive fix. The veh runs no differently when the MAF is unplugged.

If you think it is the MAF, buy used, new, or rebuilt?

Thanks in adv, Jason

BTW, anyone have any good mechanics in So Cal?

Certainly could be a bad MAF, If you have access to another car head out to a local boneyard and get a spare one, prob. 10 bucks tops...

Let me know where you live and I can tell you where to go. I live in Pasadena

    Good Luck,
    JJ

Sounds like a timing problem. Use the 700/900 faqs to troubleshoot. There are engine performance troubleshooting sections.
If you take it to a shop to have it repaired you can still find out enough for yourself to be able to watch your $'s.
