i would say the key here is 'without warning' if it was fuel related you would get SOME warning, if only a splutter...I would say this is electrical...and i would start by replacing routine service stuff, iknow i know yours is farily new probably, but its cheap, easy and it eliminates stuff...and you can probably put the stuff you take off back on the shelf..for next change...
so change:-
spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm..
now check basic electrical connections (start underthe bonnet as this is the most likely area as its the most hostile)
ALL GROUNDS INC ENGINE BLOCK
connections to coil (i might be tempted to re-attach terminals inc soldering and heat shrinking...)
plugs to ignition amplifier (power stage) etc....plugs to all sensors & injectors..
check all wiring for insulator condition (intermittant short maybee)
check altrernator and battery connections...
Now check basic service stuff like cleaning throttle body etc...
Now change the stuff that has a definate service life..and is relatively cheap..eg coil..
IF you still have issues its probably a majour bit of kit (eg power stage) anfd its time to find a freindly Volvo specialist (even better if you can find one with a salvage yard doing bricks) its one of the times when paying someone makes sense as he will probably have known units like power stages he can 'swap' onto ytour car to rule it in or out - best bit being you pay him for his time not biuts you dont need...when he pinpoints it smile sweetly and pay the money...
