Changing timing belt - what else should I do? 700 1986

I am getting ready to change the timing belt on my 86 745 GLE. I am getting the front seals, and a tensioner. I am also thinking of replacing the harmonic balancer since it is origional and wobbles a bit. I am also getting the counterhold tool for the crank shaft.

Is there anything else that I need or should replace?

The car has 200K. Last timing belt change was at 120K, when the seals and water pump, but not the tensioner were replaced.

Also, how, exactly, do I remove the fan assembly? It appears that in the past the mechanic gripped the outside of the fan clutch somehow. Why did he do this? And do I need another tool?

Thank you,
Steve

Where did you get the counter hold tool#5284
While the faq says 40$
the one listed at fcpgroton is $75 now.
Thanks

With 80K on it, I would suggest to you that your water pump is about done for. It certainly won't last until the next timing belt change in another 50K, so why not just go ahead and replace it now? It makes sense because you'll already have the fan and timing belt covers out of the way.

Usually the fan comes off easily by just removing the 4 10mm nuts holding the fan/clutch assembly to the water pump pulley. If some idiot mechanic got the nuts too tight last time, then perhaps you'll have to come up with a way to keep the engine from turning while you loosen the nuts. Just be really careful not to round off the corners on those 10mm nuts or you will hate life.

Thanks, Matt.

We're virtually neighbors.

I was wondering if I could wait on the water pump but you are probably right. What usually goes on the water pump? Bearing? Seal?

I also remember that you changed the bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends on the front end of your 740. I have the parts to do mine. If you have any pointers I would love to hear them.

Thanks,
Steve
